Post Bariatric Diet; What NOT To Eat?

Once you step out of the hospital after a bariatric surgery, you begin to realize that following a diet was never this important. Post bariatric surgery routines determine a lot about how you are going to manage your weight loss. At Houston Weight Loss center, our bariatric specialists are very particular about our patient’s health. This is why we have established some rules. You must avoid the following diets after your bariatric surgery:

Say No To Shallow Calories

After a bariatric surgery, your stomach size is reduced. And during your recovery phase, you should avoid foods that carry little to no nutritional value. Pastries, Chips, fried items, sugary foods may seem tempting but will only be dumped into the colon, causing nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Besides, these sugary foods can also cause weight gain.

Avoid Alcohol At All Costs

Since the post bariatric routine is crucial, you simply can’t take the liberty of indulging into booze. Alcohol consumption after bariatric surgery can be a cause of intoxication. Moreover, it will take the space of nutrients and minerals in your stomach. This is why, we, at Houston Weight Loss, suggest to our patients to drink 2 liters of water during the day avoiding sugary and caffeinated beverages. We also ask our patients to avoid drinking water during, after and before 30 minutes of meals. With this strategy, patients can feel full without eating a whole lot of food.

Stay Away From Starchy And Fatty Foods

Bread, pasta and pizza are definitely mouthwatering but your recovery phase will not allow you to eat them. Starchy and fatty foods take more time to digest than any other type of food. And with your vulnerable stomach, you can’t take that risk. Choosing low fat options are good for your overall health, apart from the fact that you are recovering from a bariatric surgery.

Fiber Is Not Your Friend For A While

For as long as you are healing back, you should not take fiber powered foods. You should eat fiber based foods like cereals soaked in low fat milk or boiled peas but you must avoid hard foods like celery, corn and broccoli.
